The Soldier in the Foxhole

Soldier holding head

The sky suddenly flashes with explosions. The ground shakes with the sound of artillery. Soldiers are running through smoke and chaos, shouting orders and diving for cover.

In the middle of that chaos is a young soldier who had just deployed to the Middle East. Only hours earlier, he had been joking with his friends. Talking about home. Talking about what his wedding plans were going to be when the mission ended.

But now everything has changed.

An explosion hit nearby. Dirt flies into the air. The soldier throws himself into a foxhole and presses his face into the mud as drones whistle overhead.

For the first time in his life, he realizes something terrifying: He might not live through the night. His heart pounds in his chest.

All the things he once worried about—money, work, and popularity—suddenly seem meaningless. Because now he is facing the one question every human being must answer: What happens if I die tonight?

As he sits there trembling in the darkness, he remembers something his grandmother told him years earlier: “Son, never forget that the Lord Jesus Christ died for you. And if you trust Him, He will save you.”

He had ignored those words most of his life. But in that foxhole, with war raging around him, he bows his head and whispers a simple prayer: “God…if you are real…please save me; I believe that Jesus died for me.”

And something remarkable happens. The explosions don’t stop. The danger doesn’t disappear. But inside that foxhole, a different battle ends. The battle for his soul.

Because when a person turns to Jesus Christ, they can find salvation and peace even in the middle of the worst storm.

Many people think they need a battlefield before they turn to God. But the truth is, we don’t know when our moment will come.

The Lord Jesus came to save you; He paid the penalty of your sins by dying on the Cross for you. He is risen, ascended to Heaven, and He is reaching out His hand to you to snatch you from the lake of fire, your eternal destiny…

And the question that soldier faced in the foxhole is the same question every one of us must answer: Are you ready to meet God?

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).
